It actually happened. I finally broke two hours, in a comical way — a goal I set over a year ago. The Brooklyn Half Marathon felt like a fun, grueling, frenzied, exciting race against time. The sheer number of people (around 22,000) on the road Saturday morning traversing from Prospect Park, down Ocean Parkway to Coney Island was incredible. Running can be a lonely sport. It’s nice to know you’re not alone on days like these.

Even though this was my third half, it was certainly a race of firsts:

first time the feeling of “WHY DID I SIGN UP FOR THIS RACE AGAIN?” didn’t creep into my subconscious
first time harnessing the energy to run the last 1/4 mile in a “Running of the Bulls”-type of fashion
first race with my best friend of 20 years (he’s the one standing next to me) since cross country in high school

And I’m already thinking about signing up for the Philly Half in November! Once the feeling of 10,000 miniature ponies stomping on my thighs subsides, I’ll be back on the road.

One more day. More like 19 hours and counting until I cross the starting line for my third half-marathon.

I’m equal parts giddy, nervous, and pumped. Heck, I spent the morning train ride visualizing how to run each mile, writing and rewriting goal split times. Then I keep thinking that all the planning will go out the window when the adrenaline starts pumping.

And I keep asking myself: How slow should I start? Should I pick up the pace a bit inside Prospect Park? And at what point on Ocean Parkway should I go into beast mode?

My overall goal is to finish right under 2 hours, which would also be a PR. I’d even take 1:59:59. But in all reality, the important part is finishing.

With the forecast predicting a crisp, sunny morning in the high 50s, things are looking up. See you at the finish line.

Last night at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, we had a glorious launch party for the wonderful Tumblr-born book Adulting: How to Become a Grown-up in 468 Easy(ish) Steps by Kelly Williams Brown. The night featured stories of being not-quite-grown-up from some of the Internet’s funniest writers: Kelly, Julieanne Smolinski, Lindsey Weber, Christine Friar, Caragh Poh, John Asante, and Kelly’s editor Meredith Haggerty. Our guest bookseller Word Brooklyn sold out of every last copy! If you need a great graduation gift, a guide to life, or a bunch of hilarious Tumblrs to follow while you procrastinate everything you’re supposed to be doing, we’ve got you covered.

So happy to be apart of a hilarious cast of characters and very accomplished women. My buddy Sean was nice enough to record my story about learning to become a (true) older brother. Check it out here. Audio is a bit rough, but for once, I’m not horrified by the sound of my speaking voice!

One hundred and two miles. I ran 102 miles in April. GAHHH. That’s 15-some-odd hours in parks, on sidewalks, weaving through pedestrians, sweating like I’m wearing a furnace. If that makes any sense.

No matter how I write it, it almost seems unbelieveable. Honestly, I can’t even remember running that much when I ran cross country in high school!

I’m not posting this chart to brag about how many more miles I put in over 30 days in comparison to my friends on the Nike+ Running app. I just love tracking my progress. My totals have been closer to 40-50 miles in months’ past.

With every run in preparation for my third 13.1 mile race (which will also be my second go at the Brooklyn Half Marathon), I’m amazed at how much further I can push myself.

My routine has been are a.) run at least four times a week b.) in the morning, c.) at least 5 miles, and d.) at about an 8:30 mile pace. When I trained for my first half last year, I was struggling to squeeze in even 4 miles after work at a 9:15/9:30 pace.

People keep asking me, “Are you going to run a full marathon?” Heh, I’m committed to running and staying in shape, but not that committed. At least not yet.

Once I lace up, turn on the tunes, and take the first few steps, my minds starts to clear. Anything that’s bugging me out that day just vanishes. Now, if I could only apply this willpower and commitment to my writing and storytelling projects, who knows what will happen?!?!
