mixtape MADNESS! volume 1: the covers
Sometime last week, after an exhausting day of work (on my brain), I come home to find this in the mail! What’s Mixtape Madness, you ask?
While Tumblr Buddies and Tumblr Eat-Up are making waves on the Tumblrnets, my Beantown BFFFFL (that’s Best Friggin’ Frackin’ Friend For Life, just in case you were wondering), Alison — you may know her as somuchass — and I have been contemplating trading tunes. It doesn’t have the Tumblr “endorsement” just yet (and that’s totally fine), but perhaps it’ll catch on.
Mixtape MADNESS started off with a simple note — I commented on a few of Alison’s music posts, and said something along the lines of “grrrrl, we should trade music.”
After that, if my memory serves me right, it spiraled into a Gmail convo about what themes to make our mixtapes to send to each other.
I chose mashups, since those have been rocking my world lately. As for Alison, she chose the daunting task of covers. I use the word “daunting,” because while many artists and bands exist to immortalize the songs of musicians they idolize, the recreations aren’t always done tastefully.
And these covers just run the gamut. Check out this mind-blowing lineup of tunes:
Akon - Wanna Be Startin’ Something
The White Stripes - I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself
Marc Broussard - Bring It On Home To Me
Helena Maria - Rude Boy
M. Ward - Let My Love Open The Door
Cake - Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps
Kate Nash - I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You
UB40 - Can’t Help Falling In Love With You
Nada Surf - If You Leave
The Bird and the Bee - How Deep Is Your Love
Bell X1 - Like I Love You
Katy Perry - Hackensack
Green Day - I Fought the Law
Sonic Youth - Superstar
Gypsy Kings - Volore
John Mayer - Human Nature
Lily Allen - Naive
Erik Halle & Ellie Goulding - Be Mine
Janelle Monae - Smile
The Morning Benders - Lovefool
Scala & Kolacny Bros - Creep
A few things I learned from this mix:
- I had NO idea that the UB40 song was a cover within an adaption within something else! Sneaky Brits.
- Kate Nash can sing Black Kids songs better than Black Kids can. Just sayin’.
- The MJ covers are dabomb.com
The kicker here, of course, are the dinosaur stickers. Totally thought this would be a “haha, maybe” joke through our e-mails. Oh, how I was wrong, and pleasantly surprised. Hopefully, my addition of NPR schwag to Alison’s package made up for the lack of old-school animal-shaped adhesives. Next time, I promise!
Can’t wait for the next one! If you’d like to trade mixtapes (or CDs — we actually did consider sending tapes to each other), feel free to join and let us know! Alison will follow up with a review on the mixtape I sent her. Look out for it!
